A federal judge gave Faisal Shahzad a mandatory life prison term at his sentencing in a Manhattan federal court. -
NEW YORK: A Pakistani-born US citizen who tried to set off a car bomb in New York's busy Times Square was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison.
Faisal Shahzad pleaded guilty in June to a failed May 1 bombing in Midtown Manhattan. He admitted to investigators he received bomb-making training from the Pakistani Taliban, called Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, and that the group had funded the bomb plot.
He was sentenced on Tuesday morning in Manhattan federal court by US District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum to life with no chance for parole.
Shahzad, who lived in the neighboring state of Connecticut and became a US citizen in 2009, parked a smoking sports utility vehicle in Times Square with its engine running and hazard lights flashing on a balmy springtime Saturday evening.

Twitter Launches ‘Promoted Accounts’ to Make Money




Twitter launched another scheme to exploit its 200 million users for advertising purposes. In addition, it took some baby steps toward smoothing relations between itself and third-party developers.
This latest revenue generator is called Promoted Accounts. It was announced last week by then-COO Dick Costolo at the IAB Mixx conference in New York City. Costolo was named CEO of the company today, as his predecessor, Evan Williams, announced he was stepping down to focus all his energies on product development.
Promoted Accounts allows advertisers to buy spots in the “Who To Follow” column placed beside a user’s tweet stream. The feature is designed to help users discover other users with similar interests. For advertisers, it would serve as a way to pump up their following.

Half of Indian air force equipment obsolete: official


Half of the weapons and equipment used by the Indian Air Force are obsolete and need urgent replacement, a top Indian defence official has said.
Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, pointing to investment by the government in defence, said half of the existing fighter jets, radars, transport aircraft and air defence weapons will be upgraded by 2014-15.
The country is reportedly negotiating a 3.5-billion-dollar aircraft defence deal with the United States that will be signed in November when President Barack Obama visits the Indian capital.
Naik said the air force was also likely to agree a 25-billion-dollar defence deal with Russia by 2010 to buy advanced stealth fifth-generation fighter aircraft.
