Are brains shrinking to make us smarter?
WASHINGTON: Human brains have shrunk over the past 30,000 years, puzzling scientists who argue it is not a sign we are growing dumber but that evolution is making the key motor leaner and more efficient. The average size of modern humans -- Homo sapiens -- has decreased about 10 percent during that period -- from 1,500 to 1,359 cubic centimeters, the size of a tennis ball. Women's brains, which are smaller on average than those of men, have experienced an equivalent drop in size. These measurements were taken using skulls found in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. "I'd called that a major downsizing in an evolutionary eye blink," John Hawks of the University of Michigan told Discover magazine. |

Iran opens trial of 3 Americans on spy charges
An Iranian court is holding a closed-door session to begin proceedings against three Americans detained 18 months ago and accused of spying.
Authorities imposed a blanket ban for observers, including Swiss Ambassador Livia Leu Agosti who represents U.S. interests in Iran.
The Americans were detained in July 2009 along the Iraqi border. They claim they were hiking in Iraq’s Kurdistan region and — if they crossed into Iran — it was inadvertent.
One of the Americans, Sarah Shourd, was
Bans damaging for Pakistan cricket, say ex-players
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram admitted that the lengthy bans handed out to Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer for corruption represented a new low for the besieged sport in the country.
“I feel sad for all three of these kids, two just over 20 and one just 18,” Wasim told AFP.
“I feel for their families because they are key players. This is a low for Pakistan cricket.”
The International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption tribunal on Saturday banned Butt for 10 years (five suspended)

“All I can say is that I am disappointed with the verdict, but I will only be able to speak at length when a detailed judgement comes, Salman Butt told reporters at Lahore airport on his return from Doha.
Butt said the ICC tribunal failed to prove spot-fixing allegations against him, instead he was

Salman wants to let Katrina go
There is a lot of ambiguity about when Bollywood’s most desirable woman Katrina Kaif and her boyfriend Salman Khan called it splits.
One of the reasons for this confusion is because this time around, Alpha-male Salman didn’t react to their parting as he has done in the past.
On earlier occasions when Salman split with his girlfriends, Somy Ali or Aishwarya Rai, the star usually made a public display of his displeasure.
This time he is all quiet and dignified; in fact he
