Low budget films not viable for actors like me: Akshay

Despite low-budget films enjoying the success that many big-banner movies have failed to replicate in the recent past, Akshay Kumar feels such movies are not meant for actors like him as it is not financially viable.

"Big and established stars like Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan or me cannot venture for low-budget films like Udaan or Tere Bin Laden because high box office returns are expected from our films," the actor said on the sidelines of the music launch of his forthcoming film Patiala House.

"I have seen the business of these films. There is a very niche audience for such films. When Shah Rukh, Salman or even I... do a film we have to collect a certain amount of money through our films so that distributors and exhibitors get their money back," he said.

Such kind of films collect a maximum of Rs eight crore at the box office. While, commercial films make a business of at least Rs 70 crore, the actor said.

"I am an entertainer...I am a commercial hero. I will continue to be part of commercial cinema," he added.

However, the 'Khiladi' expressed hope that low-budget films would find a greater audience in the near future.

Akshay, who is the producing Patiala House through his company 'Hari Om Productions', said he enjoys himself in the role.

"I am enjoying my stint as a producer as I produce only those films that I want to be part of. I don't produce films for money. I don't know the fate of Patiala House but I have reached a position where returns do not bother me much," he said.

Directed by Nikhil Advani, Patiala House is about a father-son relationship with an undercurrent of cricket.

"The film is all about getting a second chance and pursuing your dream. It is about one's struggles, hope and aspirations," Advani said.

Meanwhile, the film's actress Anushka Sharma, who is basking in the glory of Band Baaja Baraat said, "It was a dream come true for me. This is just my fourth film and I am fortunate to work with big stars like him. Akshay has inspired me in many ways and I hope to remain as professional as him."
