Pakistani Scientists Launch Scientific Ethics Drive

In an effort to stop growing trend of plagiarism, falsification, misreporting, denying authors credit for their work and gift authorship, researchers, social scientists and journalists have agreed to set up a national network to fight the problem by launching a scientific ethics drive.

Plagiarism, falsification, misreporting, denying authors credit for their work and gift authorship (in which non-authors gain credit for the work) were preventing the country from turning its indigenous science to economic benefits.

Participants at ‘The Conduct of Responsible Science: Safety, Security and Ethics’ – a meeting held in Islamabad, unanimously agreed to create a multidisciplinary national network to promote and strengthen the responsible conduct of science.

To begin with, such a network may take the shape of an online social network, so that more and more like-minded people may join it easily,” said Abid Azhar, co-director of the Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.

“Then, it can be transformed into a national organization with regional chapters and broad-based participation.”

Ultimately, this network is likely to investigate any alleged misconduct. It is planned to establish this network with-in 6 months from now.

Nawaz to devise new strategy against govt.

Nawaz Sharif seeks full stop against corruption of leaders of ruling party. According to PML-N’s sources, the new face of Nawaz’s rigid and rude tone is a part of new strategy adopted against corruption of government leaders. Instead of favouring or opposing mid-term elections, Nawaz Sharif will now unveil corruption of ruling leaders to award those involved the due punishment, sources told Geo news. Also, Nawaz Sharif has directed senior party leaders of submitting requisitions to convene session of National Assembly soon. The next NA session will witness debate on corruption cases of leaders and their associates.

Airport body scanners ‘could cause cancer’

The devices emit radiation up to 20 times more powerful than it was believed. Dr David Brenner, head of the centre for radiological research at Columbia University in New York, said that the concentration of the radiation on skin could pose a greater risk of cancer than expected. The risk is due to inability of a body to repair X-ray damage to its cells. "If all 800 million people who use airports every year were screened with X-rays then the very small individual risk multiplied by the large number of screened people might imply a potential public health or societal risk," the Telegraph quoted Brenner as saying. "The population risk has the potential to be significant,” he added. However, Civil Aviation Authority spokesman insisted that all the health regulations by the Department for Transport and Health Protection Agency have been considered for the device’s use. "Under current regulations, up to 5,000 scans per person per year can be conducted safely," he added.

Nigerian president bans soccer team for 2 yrs

Updated at: 0144 PST, Thursday, July 01, 2010 ABUJA: Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the national soccer team from international competition for two years after their dismal performance at the World Cup. Nigeria came bottom of their group at the tournament in South Africa, losing to Argentina and Greece before drawing with South Korea. Now president Jonathan has dissolved the Nigerian Football Federation and removed the 'Super Eagles' from the international circuit, meaning sanctions from soccer's governing body, FIFA, could follow. Nigeria's Sports Minister Ibrahim Isa Bio confirmed the decision in an interview with media. He said: "The government has taken a decision we believe is in the interests of Nigeria that we should for now, withdraw from international competition because our football since 1996 seems not to be growing. "The government spends a lot of money to encourage football in Nigeria and we need to go back to the drawing board the way Ghana did two years ago. "The president Goodluck Jonathan has endorsed this decision and the Nigerian people are excited about it. "They are not happy with the performance [in the World Cup] and the Nigerian people believe the right thing to do is start all over again. We have informed FIFA of our intentions."
