9 Unusual Places to Sleep in Airports

We can’t always blame a volcano, but at some point, many people will need to find a place to sleep at the airport. Usually at the same time.
This, of course, leaves very little room for just about everybody, so it’s natural that some people will end up with less-than-ideal airport accommodations. The early bird gets the reclining chairs, the padded benches, and the large window ledges; the latecomers get…well, whatever’s left. Which often consists of the following.
1. Chairs with armrests
Why can’t you sleep on the plane? Neck cramps from sitting upright with your head tilted back and a line of drool trailing down your shirt. And why do you get neck cramps? Because of those darned armrests, which keep you from being able to lie down horizontally and are in use by the people sitting on either side of you, anyway.
Fortunately, you don’t even have to wait until you’re sitting on a six-hour flight to enjoy this amenity. They have chairs with armrests right inside the airport, where awake travelers can sit comfortably, and not-so-awake travelers can sit something like this:

2. Behind counters
This is a surprisingly popular location, according to most people who have made a habit of sleeping at airports, such as those on www.sleepinginairports.net, and wired.com’s “Terminal Man”. You’d think more airport personnel would mind, but while they’ll cavity-search you for bringing a nail file through security, they seem to be totally cool with you setting up camp for the night where all their computer equipment and ego-trip authorization is stored.
3. McDonald’s benches
sleepingMCD 9 Unusual Places to Sleep in Airports
The golden arches don’t exactly stand for “Motel 6,” but the seats at these airport fast food joints are colorful, horizontal, and well-padded—just like…well, use your imagination.
They are also, unlike what you may be imagining if you are a sick pervert, free. At least after hours.
Though you might get a nasty wake-up call from Ronald’s posse (aka, people with acne trouble and liberal arts degrees) once the place actually opens for business.
4. The floor of Charles de Gaulle Airport
Five-second rule? Try more like negative-three-second rule—anything you drop gets irreversibly contaminated before it even hits the floor. Paris’s premier airport has been ranked by travel website The Guide to Sleeping in Airports as the world’s worst for catching some Z’s. Backing this up are testimonies about dogs peeing on the carpeting and obscene homeless people being obscene homeless people. In French.
Sample conversation:
OHP: Excuse moi–avez-vous un petit enfant? (Excuse me—do you have a small child?)
You: Uh…what?
So it’s not the kind of place you want to lie down, let alone close your eyes in. On second thought, maybe you’re better off not seeing what you just stepped in (“O la la! Mon chat mort!”)

5. The floor of any other airport
You’re right, it’s not fair to poke fun at the French. Nasty floors can happen to any airport.
San Francisco, for instance, is said to have carpet that, in the words of one traveler, “is so grotesque, I do believe it has its own ecosystem”. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Does that mean you need a passport to lie down on it? And my answer to you is: Why are you even asking such a question?
But it’s not always the carpeting-turned-dog-toilet that makes an airport floor difficult to sleep on. Travelers have recounted harrowing tales of being run down by carpet sweepers at London’s Heathrow Airport (http://www.sleepinginairports.net/features/LOW/2004/041003low.htm) and shouted into uprightness by irate security guards at New York’s JFK (http://gothamist.com/2009/07/21/jfk_third_worst_american_airport_to.php). What do we learn from this? That if you want clean floors and secure belongings, no sleep for you.
6. Multifaith prayer rooms
2924134397 3ee66bd874 9 Unusual Places to Sleep in Airports
While all the other heathens are spreading themselves out on unholy surfaces in the common waiting area, you can do what one traveler did at London Heathrow Airport (http://www.sleepinginairports.net/features/airport-adventures/2010/20100529-london-heathrow-airport.htm) and head for the multi-denominational prayer room. It’s quiet, it’s secluded, and the swaying worshipers are kind of soothing.
And if you’re feeling mischievous, you can even mumble an answer to their prayers from behind the blinders.
Of course, you’ll be going straight to hell for that. Or possibly missing your flight and getting your stuff stolen, like one traveler at Brussels Charleroi Airport (http://www.sleepinginairports.net/features/LOW/2004/041017low.htm), who made the existential mistake of spending the night in a Catholic chapel. From the looks of it, Jesus was not amused. Until the guy came back the next night and stayed in the Protestant chapel instead. Then Jesus was probably amused.
7. Wheelchairs

Ever wanted to impersonate an invalid? Well, now you can, and get a good night’s sleep at the same time. Wheelchairs are often freely available at airports, at least if you just want to sit in them and not go anywhere. And they’re cushy and comfy, even if they do have armrests.
It’s kind of like using handicapped parking spaces after hours. Just make sure you get out before a real disabled person comes along and whacks you with a cane.
8. Luggage conveyor belts

We’ve all dreamed about it—going round and round on one of those baggage carousels and seeing what lies beyond those car-wash flaps your suitcases come out of. Fortunately, nobody seems to mind if you take a nap on them, at least when they’re not moving. Alternatively, you can sleep on the carpeted islands the belts go around. And if you want to make a little extra cash while you’re at it, get a job.
9. Other passengers
volcano switz JP 592841gm b 9 Unusual Places to Sleep in Airports
When it comes to airport accommodations, it’s all relative—but you don’t have to be related to rest your head on another person’s lap. Of course, knowing the other person helps, because then you’re less likely to get clubbed by a purse, souvenir mug, or jealous spouse. But it’s still perfectly acceptable to stretch out across a total stranger, because after all, what are fellow airport campers anyway but brothers and sisters in the quest for inexpensive places to sleep?
Yeah. That’s what you’ll tell the 300-lb. Swede whose chest you decided to use as a pillow. After you get the ceramic shards out of your forehead.

Salman wants Deepika Padukone for the remake of the South film

Atul Agnihotri's remake of the South flick Bodyguard with brother-in-law Salman Khan will star Deepika Padukone. Katrina Kaif was Atul's first choice but Sallu feels the Om Shanti Om girl is more apt for the role.

A source says, "Salman is keen on working with Deepika. He feels they will look good on screen. When Atul suggested Katrina's name, he shot it down saying the project needed a fresh pairing. He's watched the original and thought Deepika would fit the role perfectly."

Both Sallu and Dippy have had opportunities to work together in the past. The star wanted to work with her in Anees Bazmee's Ready, but talks fizzled out and Asin stepped in.

Salman and Kat were last seen together in Yuvvraaj (2008). Even though the film didn't work at the box-office, they had offers to work together. However, both chose not to work opposite each other. While Salman signed Zarine Khan for his home production Veer, Kat went on a signing spree with Ranbir Kapoor.

The source adds that the star is keen on repeating Zarine in Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick. "He's keen on signing new talent as opposed to working with the same faces."
Atul remained unavailable for comment.

Travel Like a Local: Supermarket Sweep for the World’s Best Snacks

It’s that time once again to put our Local Experts to the test with our Local Expert Challenge! This week, we asked our experts on the ground to head to their local supermarkets from Perth to Prague and find some of their favorite exceptionally tasty, bizarrely regional, or particularly convenient snack foods.

We love that feeling on first landing in a new destination: everything from the airport security procedures to the color of the traffic signals are different and new. One of the best things to do to prolong this feeling, before even checking in to the hotel room, is to step in to a local supermarket. It may seem mundane, but whether they’re stocking a local delicacy or a crazy Kit-Kat flavor, a market’s shelves root travelers in a place’s everyday reality.
If these shelves could talk, they would speak volumes about regional tastes and culinary traditions… and they would make us really, really hungry.

Shanghai

Tea Eggs. These may look like an item only Sweeney Todd would devour, but they are actually great tasting and incredibly healthy. The first few times I saw them at the convenience store, bubbling away in a vat of black liquid I have to admit the smell and sight were a bit off putting… Basically, they are eggs boiled in black tea and spices, including soy sauce, anise stars and bay leaves.

Toronto

What is a peameal bacon sandwich? It is a handful of yum. Peameal bacon is a Canadian variety of breaded bacon (not to be confused with that other artery-clogger, “Canadian bacon”). And be sure to ask for extra mustard!

Atlanta

Eye candy and spice, Mama Zuma’s Revenge Habanero Potato Chips originate in Middletown, Va., but are quite popular all over. A mixture of sweetness and heat, these specialty chips are great for sharing with your travel buddies or coworkers.

Auckland

I’m convinced that New Zealand is the Land of the Long Muesli Bar Isle because that’s exactly what you get in every supermarket. These grainy, nutty, fruity little bars are extremely popular here.

Vancouver

When my sisters are visiting from England, they have to pick up ketchup chips and dill pickle chips. It sounds like an acquired taste, but after you try one, you will understand why us Canadians love them! You can even get those flavors in mini rice cakes too, for those that are a little more health conscious.

Prague

KÅ™upky is the snack food of choice for quite a few people; many ate it as a child and still have a fondness for it today. It’s a peanut butter flavored nibble; with the texture of cheese puffs, like Cheetos. You’ve been warned.

Bangkok

7 Elevens and Family Marts are ubiquitous in Bangkok, and potato chips take up most of one aisle. Sounds a bit boring and familiar, but consider the flavors: Barbecued Pork, Shrimp, Cuttlefish, Octopus, Spicy Crab. Or even some very Thai recipes such as Tom Yum Koong and Laab.

Perth

As far as I can figure out, and please correct me if I’m wrong, chocolate freckles are a uniquely Australian treat. But they’re utterly delicious. These freckles are slightly larger than the regular ones and that’s what I like about them.

Edinburgh

A packet of Haggis flavoured Potato Crisps – these will certainly give you the true taste of Scotland with the distinct Haggis flavour.

Oslo

On the fjord, the obvious snack, or rather, dinner, is a heap of prawns. You peel them, add mayo, squeeze on some lemon and make prawn sandwiches. Chilled white wine is the ideal companion.

Geneva

Can’t wait for the later-than-you’re-used-to Swiss dinner hour? Then head for the nearest supermarket where you will find the locals snacking away. Sometimes there are benches inside and outside the supermarket door just for this purpose!

New Delhi

Got a sweet tooth? This is a must have. The ritual: At the shop, jostle with the locals to see these succulent savories being deep-fried prior to being dunked in sugar syrup. They are to be had hot and still dripping with the syrup. Mmmm…messy and heavenly.

Istanbul

Charcuteries sell just about everything that is interesting, imported and fresh. You can even buy your bread there and the have the charcuterie vendor prepare you a fresh sandwich with fresh ingredients off the counter.

Napa Valley

The Napa and Sonoma valleys are fertile growing grounds for much more than the wine that makes them so famous. Depending on the season, you might see stands selling tomatoes and other garden vegetables, fresh-picked berries, exotic mushrooms, micr0-greens, and fresh herbs.

Jerusalem

Ahh…but the ultimate in Israeli-style snacking are burekas (they’re actually a Turkish import). Puff pastry filled with cheese, potato, spinach, mushrooms or sometimes all of these together.  At 4 NIS a kilo, they’re top of the snacking pile.

Maui

Spam Musubi: Quite easily the most famous snack offered to teens growing up in the Hawaiian Islands. The recipe is quite simple: One block of rice topped with spam and wrapped with sushi.

Lyon

For a typically French snack that you can throw in your day-pack and dig into anytime you get a bit peckish; pick up a jar of cornichon (fine pickled gherkins), a mini or standard baguette and a tub of rillette – a type of paste made from tuna, salmon or pork.

Cancun

Nopales are flat pads of cactus. You find them in the produce section where you can often see employees removing the spine (sharp, pointy ends) and chopping the nopales into cubes. This low-carb, high fiber food is native to Mexico.

…and the rest

Do you have a favorite snack in your neck of the woods? Did our Local Experts miss something (doubtful, but possible) you think just needs to be on here? Let us know in the comments below!

Tere Bin Laden: Starring Ali Zafar (Movie Review)

A Million Dollar FAKE!
Tere Bin Laden, starring, Prince of Pop, Ali Zafar has garnered generally positive reviews all over the world. The film earned $20,000 on Thursday night in Dubai, and it has become a smash hit in Dubai and in Mumbai, India. So Muslims and Pakistanis abroad love it, and did not find anything offensive in it. It’s a comedy film and it caters to the general psyche of the society. Banning the screening of the film in Pakistan on grounds that extremists could use it as a pretext to launch attacks, made every Pakistani sad and also excited to look for the illegal pirated version of it over the internet. Luckily I found the version within the next 24 hours of the release of the film and thankfully it has been shot quite nicely by the unknown director (pirate) sitting inside the cinema. Throughout the film I never felt that its an anti-Pakistan film. Its a pro-Pakistani film and being a Pakistani I thoroughly enjoyed the film and would highly recommend people to watch this rare gem in theaters. So here goes the first Pakistani review.
Tere Bin Laden is not your typical Bollywood film. It tells the tale of a person who fools the entire world, especially the most important country-US just to fulfill his dream. It is a satire but not the average run-of-the-mill kind. It is a spoof on America and its war on terror. Even with name of Osama Bin Laden in the film, yet there is not a single serious moment in the entire film. It is abound with funny sequences from start to finish. It perhaps will even make Osama laugh if he ever gets to see it or, may be he’ll hire Pradhuman Singh (Fake Osama) as his double.
Plot:
TERE BIN LADEN is a tongue-in-cheek comedy and its story revolves around a Karachi-based Pakistani ambitious young reporter Ali Hasan (Ali Zafar), who works in a small TV news channel ‘Danka TV’, which is run by Majeed Khan (Piyush Mishra). Ali is desperate to migrate to the U.S. in pursuit of the American dream. His repeated attempts to immigrate are shot down as his visa is always rejected because of the 9/11 backdrop and heightened security threats. He realises that the only way to get on a plane to America is with a fake passport but since that costs big bucks, he then plans to get the money by hook or crook. Majeed Khan, the Danka TV owner fines his employees and collects the money in a piggy bank. Even the local travel agent who runs a Company called Laskar-e-Amreeka is hilarious to the core. Now, Majeed sends Ali and Gul (Ali’s assistant) on a punishing assignment to cover a rooster crowing competition. While playing the competition tape in the studio, Ali finds Noora (Pradhuman Singh), a proud poultry breeder and egg producer, an Osama lookalike and hunts him down to hatch a plot for fulfilling his American dream. Then, the rest is history, better watched and enjoyed yourself how Ali and Gul find accomplices to do the make-up Zoya (Sugandha Garg), write the dialogues Lateef, the tormented colleague, the voice of radio jockey Qureshi to produce the fake Osama tape to achieve fame and glory and sell his interview as a breakthrough scoop to the international media.Unfortunately there are serious ramifications as the White House gets involved and dispatches a overzealous secret agent Ted (Barry John) on Ali’s trial. But he doesn’t foresee the consequences of his act, which include US bombing Iraq among other things. Disturbed by the impact of his act, he wants to come clean. But that will foil his plan to go to America. So he comes up with another plan, which leads to further confusion.
The film begins with a not so funny start but nevertheless it sets the mood. The film gets on track when Ali discovers the Osama lookalike and from here the film is an excellent joy-ride. The whole second half is full of action and you will never get bored of it. There are many sequences in the film which will make you laugh out laud. One being the recording session with the fake Osama, which was just brilliant, another one in which Ali’s Danka TV boss Majeed Khan falls in the man-hole and lands straight into the interrogation and the one where the grenade gets stuck on fake Osama’s hand.
The film has outrageously funny sequences and has enough punch lines which makes you laugh out loud till the very end of the film. The humour of TBL is not of a film level and especially not slapstick/vulgar comedy as in most of the Indian comedy films but it is way different and better than most of the satires we see these days. The music by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy is just okay and easily forgettable except for ‘Ullu Da Pattha’ which suites with the mood of the film. The script penned by the first time writer-director Abhishek Sharma is smart, witty and will surely put a smile on your face till the final sequence of the film. The characters are very well-written and every actor has given a charming performance especially by the fake Osama and Ali Zafar. The fake Osama who looks exactly like the original and is really witty in the whole film. His act of Osama was of course out of this world. He was the central part of the film but Ali was equally good. He with his sheer good looks and with considerable screen presence was confident and his comic timing was excellent and sparkled in the embrace of the script’s feisty wit. TBL would have lost in the jungle of Bollywood films but was frankly saved by Ali Zafar’s star power here in Pakistan because of whom people were eager to watch this film. The film is technically weak and looks amateurish as it is shot poorly by the first time director, Abhishek Sharma on a moderate budget of $2million USD. Another funny thing about the film is that it is actually shot in India but the way the first time director has shot it is really commendably. He has recreated Karachi, Pakistan in Hyderabad, India and being a Pakistani myself, throughout the film, I never felt that it wasn’t Pakistan or a Pakistani thing except for the Zoya chick. She was not at all like a Pakistani make-up artist and was a little vulgar.
The film mostly scores by the watertight innovative script, witty dialogues and the commendably performances by the star cast. TBL proves that content is king. Dialogues are biting! The whole film is quite unique as it shows fun-with-the-mr-gun (Osama and comedy o_O huh!) but the ending of it is even more unexpected from a film featuring Osama and is really very funny. It concludes with a very strong and funny message of peace and the war on terror ends. The film manages to grab your attention effortlessly till the very end.
Verdict:
Tere Bin Laden is 90 minutes, no song-and-dance, no cliches but loads of fun and pure entertainer. This is a rare gem of a movie to have hit the theaters in a long, long time. Finding another one could be as difficult as hunting for the real Osama. Though the film suffers mainly because of the budgetary constraints but undoubtedly it is the best comedy film I have seen in recent times with an original and a witty script and performances by the star cast. Its not a classic comedy but its a complete joy-ride. Must Watch!
Overall Rating: * * * *
