Octopus picks Spain to win World Cup
Octopus oracle Paul predicts Spain will beat Holland and win the World Cup.
Paul’s pick was carried live Friday on TV stations around Europe. The world-famous octopus could be seen sitting on a tank marked with a Spanish flag for only a few minutes before grabbing out a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank – indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday’s final match in the World Cup.
Paul correctly predicted Germany’s wins over Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and the country’s loss to Spain and Serbia.
He also predicted that Germany will win over Uruguay in Saturday’s match for third and fourth place.
Since predicting Spain’s victory over Germany, the mollusk has become less popular at home, while Spaniards have offered their newfound mascot protection.

World first face transplant, with tear ducts
Updated at: 1401 PST, Friday, July 09, 2010 PARIS: French doctors have carried out a successful full-face transplant eyelids, tear ducts and all on a 35-year-old man, the hospital where the operation took place confirmed on Thursday. Doctors carried out the 12-hour operation June 26 and 27 on a patient afflicted with a face-disfiguring genetic disorder. The head surgeon, Laurent Lantieri, described the surgery as a world first because it included a difficult and unprecedented transplant of tear ducts and eyelids. A similar procedure carried out in Spain earlier this year replaced most of the face, but not the tear ducts. |
Amazing paintings of a blind artist
Updated at: 1104 PST, Friday, July 09, 2010 NEW YORK: The story of this blind artist is extraordinary and unbelievable. Professional CPA with a photographic memory, Lisa Fittipaldi, lost her vision due to a vascular disease in 1993. She lost her job too, but overcame blindness and began painting in 1995. Her paintings are so colorful and bright; it’s hard to believe that they were drawn by a blind person who can’t even see colors or distance. The main challenge to Lisa was when she was told she could never create complex scenes of everyday life with people as main characters. But she managed to do so, and today her paintings are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Fittipaldi is a unique artist with an amazing inner vision. |
Megan Fox's wedding pictures come online
Updated at: 1054 PST, Friday, July 09, 2010 LONDON: The setting couldn't have been more cinematic. Sunset on one of Hawaii's beautiful beaches. But for Megan Fox, there was only one choice of leading man. These exclusive pictures bear witness to the 24-year-old actress's biggest role to date - when the blushing bride made a stunning entrance walking barefoot along the beach as she prepared to wed fiancé Brian Austin Green, 36. Swathed in a strapless white Armani Privé gown complete with a flowing16ft-long train, carrying a bouquet of gardenias and white roses, Megan looked like a textbook bride for her wedding to the former 90210 actor. The groom, former Beverly Hills 90210 star Austin Green also chose all-white Armani for the ceremony. In these newly released pictures, Megan is seen strolling barefoot along the beach in a wedding, which bore few of the hallmarks of the typical Hollywood nuptials. The couple was married on June 24th in an intimate ceremony, conducted on a deserted beach in Hawaii at sunset, to the tranquil sound of waves lapping on the shore. Megan and Brian who had been dating for six years on and off before tying the knot, were wed at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu. A local kahuna - Hawaiian priest - performed the ceremony. |
Spain offers state protection to octopus after death threats
Updated at: 1253 PST, Friday, July 09, 2010 MADRID: Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero has jokingly offered state protection for Paul, the psychic octopus, who has received death threats from German fans over his World Cup predictions. Paul, from Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, had predicted the outcome of all six of Germany’s matches, including the 1-0 semi-final loss to Spain, by choosing to eat food from boxes adorned with the flags of Germany and its rivals. Now Spain’s politicians are worried that some German fans may take their “revenge” on the octopus for their team’s exit. “I am concerned for the octopus. I am thinking of sending him a protective team,” local media quoted Zapatero, as saying. Spanish Environment and Fisheries Minister, Elena Espinosa, suggested a moratorium on going after Paul. The threat to Paul’s life has escalated after some sections of the German fans were spotted singing anti-octopus songs. According to a local newspaper, there have been “a host of comments on social networking web sites suggesting Paul should be fried, barbecued or turned into a seafood salad or paella”. “Others wanted to throw him into the shark tank,” the paper added. Major predictions, which came true in this World Cup, have been in the Germany-England Round of 16 clash and Germany-Argentina quarterfinal game. Paul had chosen Germany’s flag on both the occasions. If the eight-limbed oracle survives the threats, fans would be thinking twice about dismissing his advice in future. |
Damian Dinning on Nokia N8 video plus 35 camera samples
Nokia released a huge collection of Nokia N8 camera samples - 35 untouched images of various subjects and shot in various conditions. Also, the second part of Damian Dinning's talk about the camera has been released - this one covers the video capturing prowess of the Nokia N8.
Yesterday Damian Dinning detailed at length how he and his team have tuned the camera and offered a single sample. Today's drop however is massive - 35 photos taken straight out of the Nokia N8.
Here are a few photos, you can find the rest at the bottom of this page. Note that some have been shot in full 12MP resolution, while others were taken in 16:9 ratio (9MP):
A taste of the Nokia N8 camera samples
As promised, Damian Dinning also talked about video capture on the Nokia N8 today. The 720p videos are recorded at up to 12mbps bitrate using the H.264 codec while the audio is captured at 48kHz in 128kbps AAC format.
The video uses a process of pixel binning (so one pixel in the video uses the combined information from several detectors from the image sensor), which "in reasonable lightning conditions" results in no noise at all. This allowed the R&D team to switch off the noise removing algorithms in daylight altogether and preserve as much detail in the video frames as possible.
But the still image resolution of the Nokia N8 image sensor is 4000x3000 pixels, while HD video is just 1280x720 pixels in resolution. This sizable difference leaves plenty of headroom for the pixel binning process and enables another cool feature - video zoom.
Sure, it's digital zoom rather than optical - however the pixel binning process allows for zooming without interpolation, preserving detail and sharpness almost intact between 1x and 2x zoom and all the way to 2.5x. This lead to the decision to limit digital zoom at 3x where the image quality already starts degrading. Damian Dinning says that the digital zoom on the Nokia N8 is as good as optical zoom - check out the crops below to see for yourselves.
Crops from video frames shotw with the Nokia N8 at 1x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x zoom
Dining notes that the video source of these crops was captured with pre-production software and there have been even further improvements made to the camcorder software since then.
Unfortunately, there's no video sample, just the crops. We've seen a video sample from the Nokia N8before though and we were quite impressed (and we imagine things have improved since then).
Finally, Dinning goes on to discuss the Active Hyper-focal Distance feature of the Nokia N8. The N8 team decided on a different approach than the traditional auto-focus methods used for video by today's camera phones.
It keeps objects located between 60cm and infinity sharply focused. This limits how close objects can be to the Nokia N8 when you shoot them, but this approach has the advantage of never letting all other subject get out of focus and trying (and possible failing) to regain focus.
Nokia's audio engineers also had a role to play in the camera tuning - make the audio captured along with the videos as good as possible. They use the two microphones (one on the front and one on the back) of the Nokia N8, to make it a suitable camcorder for all situations.
They've implemented new algorithms that can handle anything from quiet sounds to very loud ones. The front facing microphone (on the display side) is very good at capturing speech, which is vital for videos where you narrate as you shoot. Another set of algorithms works to reduce wind noise, further improving the audio quality.
Here are the rest of the camera samples from the Nokia N8. If we could only get some videos as well. Enjoy!
