Hollywood actress Michelle Williams has spoken out against US censors who have given her new film Blue Valentine an adult certificate.
Williams is appealing against the rating, saying that it will limit the scope of the film.
"Our film does not depict violence, rape or torture, it's simply a candid look at the difficulties couples face in sustaining their relationships over time," she said in a press statement.
Michelle Williams stars with Ryan Gosling in the film which has been given an NC-17 stamp by censors.
"The decision unmasks a taboo in our culture that an honest portrayal of a relationship is more threatening than a sensationalised one," said the 30-year-old actress.
Williams is currently in London filming My Week With Marilyn in which she plays Marilyn Monroe.
