small chicken lays a four-inch tall egg

Egg-citing: Denise Sloan with the monster egg and her chicken Bolt

Denise Sloan could be forgiven for looking shell-shocked after her chicken egg-celled itself by laying an enormous four-inch-tall egg. The whopper is more than twice the size of normal eggs. It measures a monster 9cm by 5.7cm (2.2ins) It was produced by a 20-week-old chicken named Bolt who has only been laying for three
weeks.

Denise, a 52-year-old gardener from Christchurch, Dorset,, said she has never seen such a large egg despite owning chickens for 15 years. The egg, which has not been fertilised, is now destined for the dinner plate.

Denise, a mum-of-two, said: 'I don't know what the world record is, but all I can say is Bolt is pretty bowlegged now.
'It's enormous, bigger than a duck egg. You could make two omelettes out of it.'

Denise, who works as a gardener for a local museum, is also the proud owner of Bolt's chicken companion Nut.
She said the pair were fed a normal diet of mash and a handful of corn, and that Bolt had laid a normal-sized egg every day for the last three weeks.

Last June a chicken named Harriet belonging to Tony Barbouti laid an egg measuring as astonishing 9.1 inches in diameter. That easily beat the world's previous best of 8.6 inches..

Mr Barbouti, a 64-year-old taxi driver from Eastwood, near Southend in Essex, said: 'My chickens have laid big eggs before, but 'when I saw this one I was gobsmacked.' The heaviest hen’s egg ever laid weighed an astonishing 16oz.
