After many rumors about a possible PSP2, Sony has finally confirmed its existence. Sony isn’t talking about it openly yet, although it is believed that it will be released in Fall 2011. Although the design still hasn’t been decided, Sony’s revealed some cool capabilities of the new system.
At the time of the PSP-Go, Sony removed the UMD drive altogether and has decided to keep the PSP2 UMD-free as well. Games will probably be stored on a Memory Disk, although Sony still hasn’t decided the storage format for the UMD-free device. The UMD (Universal Media Disc) was developed for the PSP and included movies and video games. However, due to the sluggish sales of the discs, Sony decided to ditch the whole thing.
The PSP2 has a touch panel at the back of the system, similar to a mouse trackpad. It also has dual analog sticks and a larger display (one inch larger than the PSP) which Sony proudly claimed to be “HD”.
What’s really interesting is that the PSP2 may even be comparable to the Xbox 360 in its processing power. Although detailed specifications have not yet been divulged, Sony claims the PSP2 to have 1GB RAM, compared to the Xbox 360′s 512 MB RAM. So does that mean that the PSP2 will be a very powerful system and may have the Xbox running for its money ?
Although there still many things that are missing about the PSP2, its enough to stir up the curiosity of the many fans. Given Sony’s shabby performance with the PSP-Go, the PSP2 needs to be pretty amazing to cover up the old mistakes.
Note: All pictures depicting the design of the PSP2 in this post are not the actual design of the PSP2. They are just fan art.
