Nokia turns to former Microsoft man
Nokia has struggled to compete in the smartphone market under Kallasvuo's leadership.
Nokia has removed Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as chief executive and appointed Stephen Elop from Microsoft to replace him in a bid to raise its game against Apple and Google in the smartphone market. Mr Elop, currently head of Microsoft's business division, will take charge of the world's biggest handset maker on September 21 when Mr Kellasvuo steps down after four years in charge."The time is right to accelerate the company's renewal; to bring in new executive leadership with different skills and strengths in order to drive company success," said Jorma Ollila, Nokia chairman, on

Nokia celebrates its users' inventiveness in latest N8 ad (video)
There might be a tiny bit of upheaval up at the peaks of Nokia management today, but that doesn't mean we all need to stand around looking serious and forecasting who'll leverage what synergies in order to actuate the requisite paradigmatic shift in the company's device portfolio. No, we're much more inclined to go check out a new ad video that show off the mods and hacks Nokia users have

9 awesome slacker jobs you could actually have
It’s almost a universal truth that if you’re unhappy with your job, there’s a good chance you’re probably not as happy with life in general as you could be. Everyone has their own opinion on what the perfect dream job entails, but some of those require big fancy degrees and incredibly long hours. And let’s be honest, a lot of Guyism readers (myself included) may not have the chops to cut it as a heart surgeon or fighter pilot. So, here are nine awesome slacker jobs. I have no idea how one acquires some of these jobs, but

I may sing with Chris Martin or John Mayer: Atif Aslam
KARACHI: Even at a concert rehearsal, Atif Aslam is in full stage-mode. He addresses the crew on the mic, introducing his friends (Lanny Cordola and Todd Shea) who he is working with on the Pakistan America Peace through Music project – and gets Shea to sing “Aadat” with him.
It makes perfect sense. Aslam, whose debut single with Goher Mumtaz – “Aadat” – made him an overnight star, instantly jumped onto doing concerts (and began reportedly charging prices that shocked concert promoters).
Aslam is now a huge star in India and in Pakistan, and is full of optimism that things will get back to normal. His work with Cordola is the talk of the music industry and the blogosphere.
“It just kind of happened,” Aslam tells The Express Tribune. “We recorded a couple of songs and Lanny has supported us all the way. The idea to collaborate with a lot of musicians is because abroad people just see trash and terrorism (about Pakistan) and he wanted to make a documentary and tell people why Pakistan is a lot more than what we see. We went to Charsadda and Swat as

Facebook inches past Google for Web users’ minutes
New data shows that US Web surfers are spending more time socializing on Facebook than searching with Google. In August, people spent a total of 41.1 million minutes on Facebook, about 9.9 percent of their Web-surfing minutes for the month, researchers at comScore Inc. say. That just barely surpassed the 39.8 million minutes, or 9.6 percent, people spent on all of Google Inc.’s sites combined, including YouTube, the free Gmail e-mail program, Google news and other content sites. US Web users spent 37.7 million minutes on Yahoo Inc. sites, or |

iPod nano (2010) splayed open in the name of miniature science
What, you didn't think iFixit would stop at just disassembling the new iPod touch, did you? The all-new nano has also been sat atop the workbench, handed a bottle of hard liquor, and told to close its eyes and count to 120 million. The 6th-gen device weighs in at 67 percent of the volume of its precursor, with a slightly thicker body and that integrated clip on its back. Its 240- x 240-pixel display offers a 220ppi density, which, within Apple's ranks, is bettered only by the Retina Display on the fourth generation iPhone and iPod touch devices. Regrettably, just as with those two machines, the 2010 nano has its

US Open: Nadal advances to semi-finals
Top seed Rafael Nadal advanced to the US Open semi-finals by defeating eighth-seeded Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday, stretching his Grand Slam win streak to 19 matches.
Nadal, seeking his first US Open title to complete a career Grand Slam, will play Saturday for a finals berth against Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny, who outlasted Swiss 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
World number one Nadal reached his third consecutive US Open semi-final but has never reached the championship match, losing to Britain’s Andy Murray in 2008 and eventual winner Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina last year.
Nadal, 24, seeks his ninth career Grand Slam title and third in a row in 2010 after Wimbledon and the French Open. Only Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Rod Laver have won three Slams in a row in the Open Era that began in 1968.
Swiss second seed Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam champion, and Serbian third seed Novak Djokovic meet in the other semi-final. Both were off Thursday but barring rain Nadal must

Rethink Coke Studio
Coke studio season 3
What was the first thought that came to your mind when you read the first line? Trying to get into to your brains I can know one thing, if you are Pakistani then most probably you’ve labeled it as a flop and waste of time. After analysis of the #cokestudio topic on twitter one can see that for Indian listeners it still is very much happening for them (and these are the people which Pakistanis themselves believe are more knowledgeable in music). It is a realized fact that bands, solo artists and shows have to constantly evolve to keep listener-ship/viewership intact and add new ones, a fact mostly not understood by the Pakistani audience. The genre for this season was mostly Sufi, there was folk and a dash of spice with

Kindly note that Shahid Kapoor is a typical Muslim: Shahid Kapoor
Ironically speaking Shahid Kapur not only happens to be the product of a broken home, his parents Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azim having parted ways long ago on differences of opinion, but also a victim of culture clashes and religious divides of Islamic and Hinduism.
But when questioned about this he emphatically retorts, “No I was not at all affected by their separation neither am I a victim of culture clashes or the religious divides of Islamic and Hinduism.
For the simple reason that right since my childhood I have always considered myself as a typical Muslim as my mom Neelima Azim and my Nanihal’s (Maternal ancestors) Islamic influence has been too strong and too powerful enough to cause any other religious diversion in my mind.” And when SHAHEEN RAAJ asked SHAHID KAPOOR to share his views and opinions about ‘Ramzan’ and ‘Religion’ he readily agreed with an instant reaction of just one word, “Shoot”.
To begin with how about revealing the secrets of your own religious beliefs?
Come on! What kind of secrets are you talking about? Religion can never be a secret. All religions may not be like open books yet believe it or not but Islamic religion is the only religion, which has no hidden secrets.
All its basic tenets and principals are clearly mentioned in the holy book – ‘The Koran’. Not only this it is not necessary for a person to know Arabic, he can read and learn to

Quran burning canceled, but deal on mosque near Ground Zero may not be settled
Florida preacher backed off and then threatened to reconsider burning the Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, angrily accusing a Muslim leader of lying to him on Thursday with a promise to move an Islamic center and mosque away from New York’s ground zero. The imam planning the center denied there was ever such a deal. The Rev. Terry Jones generated an international firestorm with his plan to burn the Quran on Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and he has been under intense pressure to give it up. President Barack Obama urged him to listen to “those better angels” and give up his “stunt,” saying it would endanger U.S. troops and give terrorists a recruiting tool. Defense Secretary Robert Gates took the extraordinary step of calling Jones personally. Standing outside his 50-member Pentecostal church, the |
