Google today at its Chrome press conference has revealed that there are now 120 million active users of its web browser aka Google Chrome. Just 7 months ago, there were about 70 million active users of Chrome therefore as per latest released fact by Google, the number of Chrome users has nearly doubled in a time span of just 7 months.Google’s webkit-based internet browser was launched in September of 2008 and has seen tremendous growth which is evident from
its market share which rose from zero market share to nearly 10% market share within a span of 2 years.

The most liked feature of Chrome web browser is its lightweight and ability to render javascript faster than any other web browser in the market.

Linus Upson, VP Engineering & Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management said:

“This year, the number of people using Chrome has tripled from 40 to 120 million. Speed is what people love most about Chrome, and we’re always working to make the browser even faster. Therefore we’re bringing Google Instant to the Omnibox, showing search results and loading web pages as you type. We’ve also overhauled V8, Chrome’s JavaScript engine. It now runs complex JavaScript programs up to twice as fast as before.”

Interestingly, the second most popular browser in the world aka Mozilla Firefox surpassed 1 billion downloads just over a year ago.

Along with this milestone announcement Google also revealed that it just cranked up its browser’s speed with an enhancement called “Crankshaft” making it much more faster than before.

Chrome product manager Sundar Pichai said:

“When Chrome was first announced two years ago, its new javascript engine, V8, was 8x faster than the fastest existing engine. And it was 16x faster than IE. We’ve continued to improve, and today we are announcing an enchancement called Crankshaft. This makes the engine up to 2x faster than it is today depending on the benchmark. It’s 50x as fast as the fastest web browsers 2 years ago and 100x faster than IE was two years ago.”
